Matt Large – Recoil

Recoil, a sculpture by Matt Large

I’m not a fan of ArtPrize, a contest that takes place in the fall in Grand Rapids, MI, but I do make sure to see my friends’ entries each year. One of my favorite local artists is Matt Large, a figurative sculptor who has a wonderful way of seeing the world.

This year’s submission, above, is a prequel to his entry from 2012, Crime Wave. Both pieces are 2-D wire and metal sculptures depicting a sort of noir crime scene. His use of overlapping mesh for shading is inspired.

If you’re in town, head over to the Gerald R. Ford museum to see Recoil. Otherwise, let me know when you visit, and I’ll take you to his studio to see the work.

Both of these pieces are for sale, so be sure to get in touch if you know a fan or a business with a huge lobby and a love of art. A mystery book publisher, perhaps?
